He served as a parish pastor in Germany before taking a teaching position in Buenos Aires. Held became the president of the La Plata Evangelical Church until he returned to Germany in 1975.

Heinz Joachim Held (b. 1928) was a German exchange student at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary for the academic year of 1952-1953. After his return to Germany, he earned a doctorate of theology from Heidelberg University and was ordained in November 1957. He served as a parish pastor in Germany before taking a teaching position in Buenos Aires. Held became the president of the La Plata Evangelical Church until he returned to Germany in 1975.
